Petition Calls for Moratorium on Chains Downtown

Many people worked hard to co-create the vibrant, active Downtown Asheville we know today. Over multiple decades, dedicated business owners, property owners, artists, musicians, employees, dreamers, residents, and visitors laid the groundwork for our successful little downtown business district. Residents as well as guests recognize Asheville as reliably one-of-kind. It is why so many people have chosen to visit, as well as why so many return and/or stay. Allowing large chain and formula stores downtown will eliminate the unique appeal at the core of Asheville's identity. These types of businesses will erode what we value as a community and patina our image of a city that supports small business. It is a fact that large corporate chain stores take their profits out of the community, while much of locally owned business money is returned directly to the local economy. Many small and locally owned businesses pay a better wage than chains. Many of these businesses can afford to run a location at a loss in order to maintain their presence in a desired community. They are able to pay from 100-1000 percent more than market rates, driving up rental and property values. There isn't a small independent business anywhere who can compete with that.

Bon Voyage, Amy Grove!

Bon Voyage, Amy!

For as long as Adorn has been open, Amy Grove has been synonymous with Adorn Salon. No stylists came through our doors without being sculpted/schooled by the infamous Amy Grove. No person left her chair unsatisfied or unimpressed by the inimitable Amy Grove. She is unique and completely herself, ever the quirky, perfectionist fashionista. She gave so much to Adorn, she helped create its personality and gave it an edge. The gap she will leave will never be filled in the same way again, but the mark she left will always be appreciated. Hairstylists don't get retirement plans, there aren't paid vacations or other benefits and (forgive my French), but Amy Grove worked her buns off. She has now been presented with the opportunity to be her own business owner at a wine and cheese shop in Augusta, GA. This means a lot for Amy and her family and we are so happy for her. So join us in remembering all that Amy has done for Adorn and for Asheville and let's all send her the warmest wishes in this new chapter of her life! We love you so much, Amy! You will be missed and loved forever.

Hello Everyone, Amy Grove here...

As you may know, my partner Andrew has been away since November, taking care of his terminally ill mother and their family business. Because of her unstable health, unknown life expectancy, and a host of complicated financial matters, Andrew has basically (and very abruptly) had to move to North Augusta, SC. To be together as a family, our only course of action is to move too, which we will do in June.

My clients and coworkers are like extended family to me and Adorn is like my second home. My plan was to let each of you know personally that I am moving and say a proper goodbye, but you know what they say about plans...Sadly, because of the cost of childcare compared to what I can earn during those hours, I cannot afford to return to work. But please know that you can trust Adorn to take good care of you.

So instead of goodbye, I want to say thank you. Thank you for trusting me and letting me be a little part of your life. Thank you for teaching me what you know about pole dancing to real estate law and everything in between!  Over the years, one appointment at a time, I have become a better listener, a better problem solver, and a better artist because of the time I have spent with you...And thank you Adorn and Rebecca for letting me be myself!

I count myself lucky to have spent so many years in such a magical city, but it is time for the next adventure! So wish us luck as we venture forth to become wine and cheese merchants along the banks of the mighty, if somewhat polluted, Savannah River...

I wish you all the best...

Love, Amy
