There's a lot going on at the leather shop and we are so excited to show you!

Two years ago, Evar Hecht was handed the title to a shop that had been around for over seventeen years making custom belts and sandals. The shop also has one of the largest belt buckle collections in the country. Evar found his passion in his work and has enthusiastically renewed the shop. With his thorough knowledge he has seemingly made the belt buckles come alive...






Rebecca Hecht, owner of Adorn Salon, has just released a new line of baby shoes under the name Hungry Baby and the two have recently opened a new etsy shop under the name Cobblestone Leather. An example of the baby shoes can be found here.

Evar has been lucky to have a certain Brad Ford in his employment who comes from a background in welding. Being a true maker, Brad picked up the leather craft immediately and has just released a new line of saddle stitched wallets. You can find them on etsy here. Check out Brad working his handtooling magic below:

DosFamily Halloween Costume – The Cat

The Cat.
This villain has everything a Halloween costume needs. A tail and claws, a superior attitude and also the color black.
Viola wore this a couple of years back.
What we used:
Needle and thread.
A black shirt and tights. (these are thermal long johns)
Fabric and stuffing to make a tail. A needle and thread or a safety pin to fasten.
The ears are made out of fleece and cotton, attached to an old hair-band (Diadem). The tail is made out of the same kind of fleece and stuffed it with cotton.
Black socks and gloves. And one pink sock to turn those accessorized into paws.
And some make up for the whiskers and nose.
Thanks to Märta Hansson , our intern at the time, for helping us put this costume together with her needle and thread.

Amazing Pubcycle Adorn Experience!

Adorn went on a field trip on the Amazing Pubcycle and we are finally posting the pictures. We had so much fun! We were riding a bike, at the bar, while listening to good music. Then we went to Wicked Weed to sit on a gigantic picnic table and enjoy their bloody mary bar and great food! Vintage Looks: A History and Vintage Looks By Adorn

Beauty was originally considered a gift from the gods and it brought power and influence for those that looked more attractive. Because of this, people have taken drastic measures to become more beautiful. The most significant example of this is probably the ancient Greeks who used lead face paint and a derivative of arsenic to remove their body hair. The ancient Egyptians were a little more savvy with the ingredients of their makeup. They used a lot of plant and animal based ingredients. The only lead they used was in the kohl they made to line their eyes - the lining of the eye was used by both men and women to ward off the evil eye.

Makeup dropped in popularity tremendously in the Victorian era. Makeup during this time was seen as something only fit for prostitutes and the theatre.
It didn't change much as we moved into the Edwardian era, but in 1910 Max Factor cosmetics started making makeup that was more convenient to apply and cart around in contrast with the greasepaints that proceeded it, the Pan-Cake makeup was in a compact that women could keep in their purses and reapply throughout the day.

By the 1920s, makeup popularity was growing and women were applying lipsticks in deep shades of red as a gesture of liberation from the Victorian and Edwardian eras. Facelifts were also born around this time, more common in France, women sought them out secretly in America. The bow lip shape was the desired lip shape of the 20s. Beauty salons began to pop up and salon treatments became popular. "By 1925 it was estimated that American women alone spent a staggering $1 billion on beauty products (Vogue, 18)."

The Great Depression of the 1930s seemed to only feed the desire women had for makeup. Now, there was this glamorous escapism that could replace the dark days of the depression. Also, thanks to Coco Chanel, makeup was being worn to match the outfit and not the skin tone so the possibility seemed endless. Before this, eyes were lined heavy with kohl, but in the 30s it became more delicate. Mascara was used heavily on the upper lashes, leaving the bottom lashes untouched. Eyeliner was traced from the tearduct in an upward triangle. The bow lip shape was replaced with a more horizontal shape, popular lip colors were dark red, maroon, and rasberry. A healthy outdoor look replaced the alabaster complexion. Style icons of this time were Gloria Swanson and Greta Garbo.

Escapism was also the word of the 40s, limited supplies left little alcohol for perfumes, little fats for lipsticks, and little or no plastic for packaging. Makeup that women could find or afford was coveted and cherished. Eyebrows were plucked and then brushed over with a matte shadow, lips were a bright red to keep up morale, shadows with in muted natural tones, a light hairline liner lined the the bottom lashes while the top lashes were heavily coated in mascara. Leg makeup was used at this time to trace a line on the back of the legs to give the illusion of stockings - which were scarce and expensive. Style icons were Bette Davis, Lauren Bacall, and Rita Hayworth.

It is my belief that the classic look of the 40's will be big this fall. When I asked the stylists at Adorn what they liked the most about the fashion of the 40's, Jeremy said he liked the seemingly simple structures of the hair that was worn then. Holiday said he liked the classic men's cuts with length on top that is slicked back with wax or pomade. Boardwalk Empire's character Jimmy demonstrates this style pretty eloquently:

Rebecca Hecht said, "I love the 40's era beauty because it expressed both a sense of innocence and glamour. The sweet and simple eye makeup paired with the red lip is such an iconic moment in fashion and represents a golden era in history." Schwarzkopf will donate $1 to City of Hope breast cancer research for every post!

Luscious blondes with a kiss of pink—Schwarzkopf Professional’s Blonding Ambassador Kim Vo presented five golden “glamazons” of the runway. Kim showcased five different blonde looks with pops of gorgeous pink hues, as well as a genius new technique which he calls Reverse Traditional Highlights—which consists of highlighting first then smudging. “It’s a look you can do in 30 minutes for the clients that don’t have all day to spend at the salon,” Kim emphasized. One of Kim’s tips for creating a gorgeous highlight is to strive for  “perfect imperfection.” “Have fun with your highlights—get away from always being perfect,” Kim said. So why all the pink? Schwarzkopf Professional’s new partnership with City of Hope, an organization dedicated to supporting breast cancer awareness.  The Shine On Campaign invites stylists to use the new free Shine treatment on clients, snap a photo and and hashtag it to #beautygiveshope and #Schwarzkopfusa. For each photo posted, Schwarzkopf will donate $1 to City of Hope and breast cancer research—a truly amazing cause! See all the pics from Kim Vo's presentations for Schwarzkopf!



Easy Breezy Way To Participate:

1)  Artist receives the complimentary bag with product to perform the services in their salons and on models utilized in classes.
2)  They set up the marketing easel included in kit to explain the FREE SERVICE TO CLIENT
3)  They perform the post shine service to help raise money for City of Hope Cancer Research supporting breast cancer. (service should be offered free in salon at no charge to client- money is raised from the post on instagram)
4) The CLIENT then takes a "selfie photo" of themselves at the stylist station claiming they got their SKP Shine Service and posts it to THEIR Instagram account. Please NOTE IT GOES ON THE CLIENT'S PAGE NOT THE STYLIST TAKING THE PIC ON THEIR ACCOUNT
5) For every post of a shine service SKP will donate $1.00 up to $25,000.00 for breast cancer research. THANKS FOR YOUR SUPPORT!!!

Best of luck, Andrew Williams!

Our beloved Andrew Williams is moving on to bigger, better things. Andrew has been with Adorn since 2009, but in two weeks, he will be moving to L.A. to start a new fabulous life. We will miss our fantastic friend so much. Anyone that has had the privilege of meeting him knows what an irreplaceable person he is. He will be taking his last appointments at Adorn next week and then it's bon voyage! Come and tell him how much you love him and maybe he'll come back soon!
