Blog for Bobs

So incredibly classic in their nature that they deserve their very own blog.
Starting to make an appearance around 1910, bobs became the most popular hairstyle for women in the 1920s. Adopted by women who were rejecting old traditions and moving forward into modernity, they were making a statement as being "liberated".

A short story called "Bernice Bobs her Hair," written by F. Scott Fitsgerald in 1920 is about a girl named Bernice who is socially inept and goes to stay with her cousin, Marjorie, who views Bernice as a burden on her social life. None of the boys want to dance with Bernice, either.
Bernice hears Majorie complain to Marjorie's mother that Bernice is socially hopeless. Bernice announces that she's going to leave and Marjorie reacts unfazed. Bernice then relents to Majorie turning her into a society girl. Marjorie teaches Bernice how to hold conversations, flirt with every boy including unattractive ones to make herself seem more desirable, and how to dance. Bernice gets really good at being a society girl. Her best line is threatening to bob her hair and telling the boys they can watch. She gets so good, in fact, that she peaks the interest of one of Marjorie's beaus, Warren. Out of jealousy, Marjorie convinces Bernice to bob her hair. The bob looks flat and strange on Bernice and all the boys quickly lose interest.
Marjorie's mother says that Bernice's haircut will likely cause a scandal at the upcoming party that is in Marjorie's honor as the haircut was seen as a statement for "liberated" women. Bernice decides to go that night on a train leaving at 1 a.m. Before she leaves, she sneaks into her cousins room and cuts of her braids. She throws them on Warren's front porch on her way to the train.

Famous women who sported this cut included:

Clara Bow

Joan Crawford

Lady Diana Cooper

There are five different kinds of bobs:

Chinese bob: Cut at the neckline, bobbed up around the edge.

A-line bob: A typical bob cut, with slightly longer hair in front, cut in an asymmetrical style.

Shingle bob: An old-fashioned, dome-shaped bob with the back razor-cut very short into a V shape.

Buzz cut bob: Where it is shoulder-length in the front and close-cropped at the back.

Shaggy bob: A messy bob layered with a razor.
